Rodeo royalty headed to NP

North Platte will be transformed into a sea of sequins and leather this week as 19 rodeo queens from out-of-state descend on the community. Miss Rodeo America Kelli Jackson will be among the entourage smiling for cameras and signing autographs around town. She hails from Mississippi.

The other states that will be represented are Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

"These young women help to make the celebration special," said publicity chairwoman for Miss Rodeo Nebraska Sharon Negley. "The public sees them all over town in their beautiful outfits, and they're such charming girls."

Negley said North Platte is one of the primary stops state queens try to make.

"A lot of them also hit Cheyenne and Pendleton, but the professionalism and hospitality of our pageant and of the Buffalo Bill Rodeos is well known at the national level. We've had girls say it's one of the major highlights of their year."

Although the queens will arrive at varying times, Negley said the majority of them will be in North Platte by Sunday afternoon - in time for a meet and greet session at 5:30 p.m. at the Wild West Arena. The session is free and open to the public.

During their stay, the women will be involved in a variety of activities. They will assist with the Kids Costume Parade, will attend all of the pageant events, will ride in the grand entries of the rodeos and will be featured at autograph signings throughout the community. Local businesses donate vans for the girls to travel in.

Negley said host homes have been lined up for this year, but anyone interested in becoming a host family for next year's pageant can contact Paula Stobbs at 534-9513.

Queens who travel together are often paired up together, so host families may have more than one girl staying with them. Negley is hosting this year, and said she can't wait for the women to arrive.

"They're absolutely delightful," she said. "Hosting is a great way to learn about other states and pageants, and the young ladies are so good at interacting with their host families. They're just a joy to be around."

Negley said having about 18 visiting queens is normal for North Platte, but high for other contests around the nation.

"I want to say most have around 10," she said. "We're fortunate to be able to have so many outside queens come to the pageant and privileged to have a community that is so supportive of them."

Days of the Old West PRCA Rodeo

Tonight I went to the Days of the Old West PRCA Rodeo and All Horse Parade in Delta, Utah. I was re-united with my good friends from Ogden Pioneer Days, the Weber County Mounted Sheriff's Posse. The Sheriff's Posse is a great supporter of the Miss Rodeo Utah and Miss Rodeo Ogden Pageants. Thanks for all that you do. It was nice to see you again.

Utah State High School Queen Coronation

Congratulations to the new Utah High School Rodeo Queen Court. Queen is Ashley Scott who will represent Utah at the National High School Finals in July. Her 1st Attendant is Carlie Brotherson who will compete in Fallon, Nevada at the Silver State International competition, 2nd Attendant is Bailey Woolsey and 3rd Attendant is Tiffany King.

Growing up in the Utah High School Rodeo Association I can say from the bottom of my heart that if your dream is to be a rodeo queen, Utah is the place to be. The girls that live and compete here are very very lucky. We have one of the best programs because we have wonderful committees and very supportive, amazing parents. Win or lose, these girls are better individuals because of the experiences they have had in preparing and competing for rodeo queen competitions. I'm so proud of all of you!

Utah State High School Queen Contest

There were 11 tough competitors in the Utah State High School Queen contest today. They competed in modeling, public speaking with a two minute prepared speech, impromptu, interview, a hand written test on the rulebook, horsemanship, and were also judged on appearance and personality.

Some people may not know but I am a lucky girl to have a very talented mother who sews. She made three of the dresses there today including mine, outgoing Utah State Queen Courtney Woolsey, and contestant Bailey Woolsey. Thanks mom for all that you do. I couldn't have done this without you.

Price Black Diamond Legends PRCA Rodeo

I attended another Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo with my two new little girl friends in Price, Utah. It was great to be on hand with rodeo clown Kevin Higley and stock contractor Pat O'Maley of Slash T Rodeo Company. I appreciate the Black Diamond Legends Rodeo for inviting me and for their hospitality.

It was a long, but fun weekend traveling from Moab to South Jordan and back to Price and I want to tell my mom and dad how much I appreciate them for taking time off work to travel with me this busy weekend.

2010 Pharmacy Cup and Polo Match

The Pharmacy Cup fundraiser provided a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the sport of kings while supporting the College of Pharmacy at the University of Utah. The U's Pharmacy program ranks among the top programs in the nation and the money raised will make it possible for the U scientists and researchers to work in a world class facility. The polo match honors the legacy and generosity of the Skaggs family, who are wonderful supporters of the College of Pharmacy and passionate fans of polo who also had a daughter playing in the match today.

A common supporter of the Pharmacy Cup, Miss Rodeo Utah, and Ogden Pioneer Days is Mr. Spence Eccles, who placed the Miss Rodeo Utah crown on my head at Pioneer Stadium on July 24th. He gave me the traditional kiss on the cheek today and told me that he plans to be a part of the crowning ceremony this year as he has for many years.

Moab Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo

The Moab Canyonlands rodeo has great contract personnel, an awesome committee, and a wonderful bunch of rodeo queens.

Their Stock Contractor is Bud Kerby of Bar T Rodeo Inc, announcer is my good friend Jody Carper who I was able to go to dinner with along with his wife Kelli in Pocatello at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, and rodeo clown Randee Munns.

The Chairman for the rodeo is Kirk Pearson and their rodeo queen is Tia Bates.

Moab Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo

Tonight I arrived in Moab for Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the Canyonlands Rodeo. It was nice to finally be in warm enough weather to get out the sponge and give my horse a good bath before the rodeo.

I was able to meet some sponsors at the rodeo including Steve White who is a running for Grand County Sheriff, Buzz and Julia Bates from Whites Ranch, and Veronica Bullock and her family who are also committee members. I appreciate the rodeo committee and their hospitality. I was also able to stay at the Best Western Canyonlands Inn who is a rodeo sponsor and has some of the nicest rooms and services I have ever had at a hotel.

Ogden Noon Exchange Club

Chenae, Martina, Craig, and I met at the Ogden Golf and Country Club with the Ogden Noon Exchange Club today to invite them and their families to attend some of the great events held during Ogden Pioneer Days.

The Ogden Noon Exchange Club is a group of approximately 100 business and professional leaders from a variety of sources including state and local governments, Utah State University, Weber State University, and University of Utah, the medical community, U.S. service personnel, and a variety of local entrepreneurs. They meet the first four Tuesdays of every month with the mission to make our communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and its national project: The Prevention of Child Abuse.

Cache County Queen Contest

I was so impressed by the Cache County Rodeo Queen contest and their amazing committee and involvement from girls in the community. This year there were 15 contestants, all of whom were from the Cache County valley. The outgoing queen, Jackie McMullin did a great job promoting the rodeo and queen contest this year and represented them well at the Miss Rodeo Utah competition last July where she was 3rd Runner Up.

The newly crowned Cache County Rodeo Queen is Taci Shaffer. Taci is graduate of cosmetology school, is an eyelash extension stylist, and will be completing a Master Esthetician program this fall. She is pursuing acting and modeling careers in Salt Lake for Whillemina Agency. Taci is also spending her time training for a couple of marathons this summer, working for a hospice agency and working with disabled teens. Taci's attendants for the Cache County Rodeo are Carlie Davis and Callie Checketts. The Junior Queen is Taylor Anderson, Princess is Bailee Noble, and the Junior Princess in Morgan Perkins. The girls all looked beautiful today and I was honored to be invited to attend.

Pony Express Days

Tonight I attended the first annual Pony Express Days Rodeo in Eagle Mountain with their queen Chantell Pilcher and first attendant Regan Torres. I was very impressed with the rodeo committee and their organization of the first rodeo. Hours before the rodeo started I was able to get a picture of the beautiful scenic view from the rodeo grounds and it was great to see the full stands on a Friday night when the rodeo finally got underway.

Rusty Allen, Eagle Mountain Resident and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo saddle bronc riding qualifier is the Rodeo Ambassador for Pony Express Days.

West Haven Hawk Walk

Today was the West Haven Elementary School Relay for Life Hawk Walk. There were hundreds of kids age Kindergarten through Sixth Grade who came and walked to raise money with America First Credit Union for the American Cancer Society. They were also walking in honor of their two school teachers who are cancer survivors.

The walk was real fun. Some of the laps had themes; for example skipping, walking backwards, changing directions, crazy eights, walking through the human tunnel, boogie dancing, and many others. The kids were laughing and having a good time and they were served water, punch, and cookies by America First Credit Union.

America First Credit Union is a sponsor for Miss Rodeo Utah and they do a lot to give back to the community as well. I appreciate all that they do.

Riverdale Lions Club

Tonight I gathered at the Riverdale Lions Club meeting with Chenae Shiner, Martina Wardle, and Ogden Pioneer Days Chairman Dave Halverson to further promote Ogden Pioneer Days and some of the great events that are part of the celebration.

Dave shared some stories tonight that made me even more passionate about the Ogden Celebration. He told about how Mayor Harmon Peery organized the western festival during the Great Depression in 1934 to boost the spirits of the locals and bring tourists to the city. Those traditions are living today when families come together in the community to boost moral while honoring all pioneers.

We also talked about the three parades that are held every year as part of the original tradition. The Children's Parade where all children and families are encouraged to come and participate and the kids receive a free ticket to the first night of the rodeo. The Horse & Hitch Parade, one of the largest in the west with over 600 entries of horses, wagons, and carriages. And finally the Ogden Pioneer Day Parade with thousands of spectators to watch marching bands, floats, horse drawn carriages, antique automobiles, youth groups, and of course Miss Rodeo Utah Contestants.

There truly is something for everyone at Ogden Pioneer Days and it really has become more than just a local community celebration. It involves people from all over.

Mount Ogden Rotary Club

The Fabulous Four (Craig is taking the picture) were out again today sharing more great stories about the traditions and exciting events that are part of the Ogden Pioneer Days Celebration. I went to the Mount Ogden Rotary Club meeting at the Prairie Schooner with Chenae Shiner, Martina Wardle, and Craig Bielik this afternoon. We went into detail about some of the events during the celebration including all of the judging events held in conjunction with the Miss Rodeo Utah Pageant. One awesome thing about most of the events held during the Ogden Pioneer Days Celebration and Miss Rodeo Utah Pageant is that they are free admission making them great, affordable summer entertainment for the entire family.

The Mount Ogden Rotary Club is also planning their own event; the 7th annual Rubber Duck Race fundraiser on the Ogden River to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis and also the Weber County and Ogden City Schools 3rd Grade Dictionary Project. I appreciate the Mount Ogden Rotary Club for the wonderful lunch and applaud their efforts as well as the Ogden Pioneer Days committee to organize great events to involve everyone in the community.

Buffalo Point Kindergarten

Today I had a great time with the morning and afternoon Buffalo Point Kindergarten classes in Syracuse. Their last unit in school is about cowboys, cowgirls, and the old west and they even have their own kindergarten rodeo at the end of the year. I went to teach them about the history of rodeo and about each of the rodeo events. I took my saddle, bridle, my roping dummy that the kids named Fred, chaps, spurs, and ropes so that the kids could participate in some of the events. At the end of the lecture the kids got to practice asking questions that they had wrote down ahead of time. My favorite questions was "Does the Queen have a King?" Each class made me a book labeled "One Hundred and One Questions for Miss Rodeo Utah" with pictures that each student drew along with their questions. It was a fun day and I appreciate the school for inviting me.

Ogden Breakfast Exchange Club

I was up bright and early this morning to attend the Ogden Breakfast Exchange Club meeting with Chenae Shiner, Miss Rodeo Ogden, her Attendant Martina Wardle, and Craig Bielik, the Marketing and Public Relations Director of Ogden Pioneer Days to inform the members of the club about all the great events that are part of the Ogden Pioneer Days Celebration. Congratulations to the new Pleasant Grove, Strawberry Days Royalty. The queen is Bailey Sizemore, 1st Attendant is Karianne Berry, and 2nd Attendant is Chantelle Pilcher. The contest was excellent, as it is every year. I was in the Strawberry Days royalty for two years and they have one of the best rodeos and best committees in the country. Congratulations to Chenae Shiner, the new Miss Rodeo Ogden for 2010. She is a 19 year old student at Utah State University. She will do a wonderful job promoting Ogden Pioneer Days, the state's biggest and best statehood celebration. The five-day rodeo will be held July 20-24th. The contestants were judged on appearance, personality, horsemanship, public speaking, photogenic ability, and interview skills. Chenae's attendants are Martina Wardle and Ashley Stewart.

DNCFR Special Kids Rodeo

The Special Kids Rodeo had 41 participants this year. They were able to rope cows, ride different horses and bulls, and feed a little miniature pony. They received back numbers and prizes just like the cowboys and cowgirls at the rodeo and the rodeo announcer Jody Carper was on hand to announce all of the events. My special athlete, Robert, turned 9 years old on the day of the special rodeo and got his name announced over the loud speaker.

Pocatello, Idaho

It was an exciting and eventful week in Pocatello as we worked hard to promote the rodeo and educate the public about the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo. We arrived Tuesday night to attend a kickoff party at the Holiday Inn, the host hotel for the rodeo. In a leather dress, I kept my fingers crossed that no queens would take a dive in the swimming pool. The rest of the week we spent visiting schools, hospitals, retirement and assisted living homes, sponsors, interviewing for radio and television stations, signing autographs, raising money for Primary Children's Hospital, selling programs and raffle tickets at the rodeo, and promoting the sponsors at the rodeo by carrying their banners through the arena. It was a fun week. We found a Starbucks right away so that our energy was up and our eyes were wide open all week!

As a former Miss Rodeo Ogden I can tell you this is one of my most precious achievements. Last year Ogden Pioneer Days Celebrated its 75th Anniversary and many past Miss Rodeo Ogden's were invited to participate in numerous events during the July 24th Celebration and during the Miss Rodeo Utah Fashion Show; they were even able to dance in our fashion show if you weren't there. I think that's pretty neat to be involved in an event that represents a huge part of our lives and our achievements. Being involved in the future is something that I look forward to as Miss Rodeo Ogden 2007 and I hope that the young ladies that are possible candidates for the title don't let this amazing opportunity slip by them. iFly Utah, Indoor Skydiving

Tonight some of the Miss Rodeo Utah contestants, Miss Rodeo America Kellie Jackson, the Washington State High School Queen Jonnie Crossland, and Miss Rodeo Utah committee member Jeff Haney went indoor skydiving at iFly in Ogden, Utah. It was so fun! We took a 20 minute safety class and practiced our skydiving position and then we each got in the tunnel and took turns flying. Our instructor, Deven was awesome and he showed us some of his many tricks. Thank you to Peggi Neilson for making arrangements to allow us all to come. Some of the divers that work at iFly are the same divers that you see at many rodeos throughout the summer that drop into the arena carrying the American flag, including the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo so I encourage everyone to go experience the fun at iFly.

Rodeo Queen Bootcamp

I have been to the Utah Rodeo Queen Boot Camp every year for the last 12 years in some capacity or another, and every year I have watched as Miss Rodeo Utah has taken an active role on its amazing staff. This year was almost surreal to me as I was able to stand in the boots of the women I have admired for such a long time. It was an amazing experience to actually be Miss Rodeo Utah and talk to girls about how to be the best they can be. It was an event to which I was looking forward since I won the crown last July. This year we had Miss Rodeo America, Kelly Jackson at the clinic and the girls learned everything about rodeo events, interviewing, public speaking, appearance, personality, horsemanship, and many other aspects of a pageant. There is also a judging clinic that is ran in conjunction with the rodeo queen clinic and there was a great turn out this year. I’d like to thank Mesia Murphy and Jennifer Flint for inviting me to be a part of their event.

Lincoln Elementary School Reading Day

In celebration of Theodore Geissel's (better known as Dr. Suess) Birthday over 10 million children in America participated in Read Across America in 2009. This year I was able to participate in the activities along with Coach McBride from Weber State, Justin Williams from 2010 American Idol, Ogden City Police Officers, nurses, veterinarians, and many other great people. I took my book Rodeo Time to read to Mrs. Castle's 3rd grade class. I also took my veterinary books, my Prorodeo Sports News Magazine, a PRCA Rule Book, and the PRCA Media Guide so that I could show the kids how important reading is for my job as Miss Rodeo Utah. After reading and answering questions about myself I went to the library to meet the Cat in the Hat and eat Birthday cake. Thank you Lincoln Elementary School for allowing me to participate and thanks to McKenzie, my student escort.

I've done it all now. I had to become Miss Rodeo Utah so I could finally have a chance to see the ocean and go to Disney World. It was so awesome! We made a lifetime friendship with the Lewis Family, whose daughter Mallory competed at the Special Kids Rodeo earlier in the day. Mallory's parents Denise and Larry both work at Disney World and made it possible for 13 of us to go to the park for a couple hours after the rodeo. We had a "Fast Pass" to let us go to the front of the line everywhere we went and we were able to go on 5 rides in about 2 hours. It was so cool. Its amazing; the opportunities that I've been given this year. Its more than I could ever ask for. This week was the funnest experience I've had in a long time, maybe ever. I've made some of the best friends I will ever have and I laughed so hard at times that my stomach hurt. I felt like a little kid again as 14 girls ran through the park with our big hair, wranglers, cowboy boots, and big smiles on our faces. So many times throughout the night girls would look at each other and say "this is amazing, this doesn't happen in the real world, and there still are amazing people out there" and the Lewis Family is an example of those nice, incredible people that do nice things for complete strangers just because they are good people. Thank you so much. You've definitely made an impact in my life with this one night that I will remember forever.

Special Rodeo & Sunday Performance

Today was the special kids rodeo with the rodeo performance immediately after, so the kids kind of felt like they were an opening act or part of the actual competition and they were all invited to stay for the rodeo. I was able to carry my Utah Sate Flag during every rodeo performance on the horse Pistol that was provided for me. He was great!

It was a pretty packed Saturday night performance at the rodeo. They actually had an interesting task for us at the rodeo every day. We filled out surveys, asking the spectators where they were from, how they heard about the rodeo, and what their favorite part of the rodeo was. It was fun to meet people and surprising to hear all the different places they called home. There were people from the United Kingdom, Maine, UTAH, Nevada; all over.

Florida Beach Trip

I have to admit it. I'm 24 years old and this was my first time seeing the ocean. I think I've been changed forever. It took me awhile to warm up but we eventually had 78 degree weather and I even got in the water, partially; ok just up to my ankles. Some of the girls claim that they saw dolphins, but I'm not really sure about that.

We did some silly things all week long in our spare time. After air boating, we went to Heather Hall, Miss Rodeo Florida's house for lunch and tested our strength and balance. This morning we went air boating on Cypress Lake with our tour guide Dale. It was a lot of fun. We saw a couple alligators on the trip. This alligator in the picture above was 11 feet long. Once again with the cold weather they have had in Florida, the wildlife is not acting normal. Usually the alligators won't let you get too close but right now they are lethargic in the cold weather and really just want to find a place in the sun. Our boat was basically right on top of the back half of this alligator and he didn't even move while Miss Rodeo America, Kelly Jackson reached down and touched him.

Florida Hog Hunting

Tonight we went hog hunting on swamp buggies at Deseret Ranch, a 365,000 acre cattle ranch owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is one of the largest cattle operations in the world with 44,000 cows and 1300 bulls. The ranch has had to remove a lot of wild hogs from the land because they ruin the farm and grazing ground. There were around 1500 hogs removed over the last year, but do you think a group of rodeo queens could find one? You guessed it, we couldn't. The weather is colder than normal in Florida this winter and as a result a lot of the wild hogs are staying sheltered. I was kind of sad that I couldn't see a hog but Regina, my host mother still took me over to her neighbor's house so that I could get a picture of their pot-belly pig.

This morning we made school visits to three different elementary schools in the Kissimmee area. In Kissimmee instead of getting out of school for President's Day, the schools are out for "Rodeo Day" on the Friday of the Silver Spurs Rodeo. Now that is lucky. Our lesson at the schools involved teaching the kids about different tack and equipment used in rodeo as well as information on each of the seven rodeo events.

I left for some warmer weather today. I am going to Kissimmee, Florida for the Silver Spurs Rodeo and it sounds like we have an awesome agenda for the week. While traveling today I had a layover in Denver, Colorado and the pilot called me to the cockpit and let me sit in his chair for a picture. He taught me some things about flying a plane and I couldn't believe all of the buttons and gadgets. It was interesting.

1st Annual Ogden City Winterfest

The Ogden Pioneer Days Foundation sponsored and organized the Skijoring Event where a single tow rope is looped around the horn of a western saddle and the horse and rider pull a skier at a fast pace over a course of snow as the skier navigates through jumps and obstacles. The skier is timed during the course and I made an excellent flag girl for the timers.

My final night at the rodeo was the most exciting. I was able to carry the National Western Stock Show Flag at the beginning of the rodeo and have my biography read from the president's box again. I was also able to carry flags during the sponsor presentation where four queens carry 14 flags into the arena in about 90 seconds. Its pretty quick and exciting.

All week while we were not participating in different events during the rodeo, the queens were able to sit in premium seating. We were placed about 10 feet behind the announcer Boyd Polhamus on leather sofas. Now you can't beat that.

Denver Market

While I was in Denver I had the honor to work at the Denver Market for Tandy Belts, recently acquired by Chambers Belts, a division of Wrangler Brands. It was such a neat experience. They provided us with some great belts to wear during the week and take home. I love mine! Tandy Belts is a sponsor for Miss Rodeo America and they also provided all of the contestants in December with four belts each! The Denver Market is huge; so much more than I expected. There are four floors of merchants that sell their product lines to retailers. A lot of retailers go to market to buy products for their stores for the entire year. I worked for Tandy both Friday and Saturday and was able to meet some great people. Friday I was invited to the Wrangler booth for lunch and Saturday I was able to meet former World Champion Tie-Down Roper and Wrangler model Stran Smith and his wife Jennifer Douglas Smith, a former Miss Rodeo America. I want to thank Tandy Belts and Daniel, Mitzi, Mike, and Mic for allowing me to work with them for a few days.

National Western Stock Show- Denver, Colorado

Today I arrived in Denver for the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo. First thing I ran in to Miss Rodeo Wyoming, Erin Heffron and Miss Rodeo Nebraska, Michelle Boeshart. Now Utah has a little different program than most state pageants in that we don't have a "lady-in-waiting", so I won Miss Rodeo Utah in July and competed in Las Vegas in December. In other states they win in around June, start their reign January 1st, and compete the following December. Most of the girls that I travel with now are not girls that I competed with in Las Vegas for Miss Rodeo America. Its a little different but I'm lucky to get to meet two groups of great ladies. There were quite a few state rodeo queens attending the rodeo in Denver and even more were arriving later in the week after I left but they had a lot of fun activities planned throughout the whole program. Tonight at the rodeo I got to carry an event sponsor flag and help with the mutton bustin.

Kaysville Elementary D.A.R.E. Graduation

As a 1997 Graduate of the D.A.R.E Program, it was an honor to be invited back as a guest speaker at Kaysville Elementary School. I enjoyed spending time with students who are focused on making good decisions about their future and are lucky to have such supportive parents, teachers, and friends. The program was conducted by Principal Dibble and D.A.R.E Officer Dave Pollard and included three speakers: Mayor Steve Hiatt; Chief of Police, Mike Lee; and myself. I spoke to the group about setting goals for their future as I did at 12 years old to become Miss Rodeo Utah and that they are capable of all the great things that they dream of. I told them about my first time being offered drugs and I also talked to them about celebrities and athletes like Michael Phelps and Taylor Swift and the consequences of them using or not using drugs. Four of the students read their winning written essays and they learned the song "Hot to Not" and sang for their parents. I was so proud to see them all graduate today and listen to the stories they had to tell about their knowledge of drugs and their confidence to choose good friends and make wise decisions. Hooray Kaysville Elementary 5th Graders!

Jaynie Nye Memorial Benefit, Kurt Bestor Concert

It was an evening with a lot of royalty at the Jaynie Nye Memorial Benefit and Kurt Bestor Concert. The event featured a pre-concert dinner, with a silent and live auction to benefit McKay-Dee Hospital’s Cancer Services. Some of the guest royalty included Miss Utah, Whitney Merrifield; Miss Weber County, Kami Alldredge; Miss Kaysville, Mallory Wahlstrom, the Dodge National Circuit Finals Queen, Stormy Henderson; as well as many other beautiful girls. We helped the guests find their assigned seats and assisted during the live auction. During the live auction I held up the Browning Shotgun that was auctioned off and afterwards a guest came up to me and said "we knew that Miss Rodeo Utah would be the only queen brave enough to hold up that shotgun" and they knew what they were talking about. It was a beautiful evening and an honor to be invited.

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Round 4

Boy, I'm sure glad we stayed in Las Vegas a couple more days because our seats for the rodeo on Sunday night were smoking. Not much beats a hot date at the best rodeo in the world and a prime rib dinner. I could make that a yearly tradition. It was unfortunate that I was not able to make it to work in time on Monday since it is a seven hour drive, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I went shopping at Cowboy Christmas and Country Christmas and bumped into friends everywhere we went including Angie Burton, a former Miss Rodeo Utah, who looked beautiful carrying the American Flag at the rodeo that night. I'm already making plans for next year.

Las Vegas Support Group

Okay, okay, I'm back online finally. I'm thankful that someone got these pictures for me so that I can remember how many people were supporting me in Las Vegas; my closest friends and family. I was crying before the fashion show even started that night because my 82 year old grandmother had made the trip to Las Vegas. For someone that doesn't show much emotion I have to admit I was a little emotional a couple times during the week. My mom made me a small scrapbook with pictures of all my friends and family and co-workers and they each wrote me a message next to their pictures. I received it from our chaperons on the way back to our rooms one night and I opened it and the first picture was of my parents and then my grandpa Wade that passed away when my dad was young and the tears just started flowing. Miss Rodeo Wyoming Allie Bass said "Chris, you're so funny" but I couldn't help it. Each time I turned the page more tears would come and soon I was almost laughing because I was being such a baby and then I closed the book and there was this long sigh of relief..... Competing for Miss Rodeo America was one of the biggest events of my life and I didn't want to let anyone down, but throughout the week it became apparent that they would be proud of me no matter the results and honestly I was proud of myself. I placed in the top 10 out of some beautiful, smart, talented young women and I had the time of my life. It was such a great experience and I made some of the best friends that I will ever have. I appreciate everyone that was there supporting me including our Miss Rodeo Utah committee and the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo Committee. I hope you all had an awesome week, as did I. Look at the bright side, I'm still Miss Rodeo Utah for seven more months.

Second day at Miss Rodeo America

The second day at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant started with the Horsemanship portion of the competition. Family and friends of all 28 contestants were at South Pointe equestrian center to cheer on their favorite state queens. As a whole, the group did a fine job. It took several hours for for both go-rounds. Supporters for Chris Wade, our representative from the Beehive State, drew in a collective worried breath when Chris entered the arena on the roan she drew for the first g0-round. That horse had decided he simply didn't want to move forward into the arena. It took Chris nearly a minute to coax the horse, through hand, weight and leg cues, to enter the arena and start his lope down the right side of the arena. The crowd burst into spontaneous applause when Chris, seemingly unfazed by the ornery horse, broke into a lope on the correct lead. From there, Chris, who wore the purple-and-gold shirt and Wrangler pant outfit made for her by her mother, Tami, did a phenomenal job on this horse, which clearly didn't really want to be in the arena. Chris looked confident, didn't lose her patience and stuck with it throughout the ride. We were so proud of her. She did a great job. The second-go round was exciting to watch. Several other contestants had already done really nice jobs so the pressure was on Chris to do a nice job too. We were all surprised at how rapid she entered the arena -- on a sprint down the middle of the arena. She cranked the horse to a nice stop, backed him straight down the middle and then started at a nice clip to the right. Chris executed two flying lead changes during her pattern. You could tell she was having fun -- but she told us later that her legs were killing her. It took quite a bit of leg strength to get that sorrell -- named Floyd -- to properly execute the pattern. Chris told us that later one of the other contestants told her, "Chris, you really rocked Floyd's world." Chris has told us several times how friendly all the other contestants have been, and it seems like they are all having a very good time. This year's bunch are very pretty, and it's been a delight to get to know all their friends and families who are here to support them. We were able to eat lunch with Chris, and she seemed very upbeat about the two go-rounds of horsemanship and the Fashion Show rehearsals. In the evening, we attended the get-acquainted party. We were able to sit with some very nice folks from Mississipi, eat some great food and dance to some music. Red and Cindy Wilk, the couple from South Dakota who judged the Miss Rodeo Utah Pageant several years ago and have been so nice to Chris throughout the years, sponsored the dinner. They also gifted all the girls beautiful rings made of Black Hills Gold. Chris loved it -- and it meant a lot coming from the Wilk family.

First Day at Miss Rodeo America

Quite an exciting day in Las Vegas -- the first day of the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. Chris Wade, the gal from Heber who is representing the Beehive State, arrived ready to compete. Thanks to the Miss Rodeo Utah organization, our Miss Rodeo Utah, dressed in a buckskin skirt and vest, was whisked from the airport to the Orleans Hotel and Casino in a black stretch limo. After a restless night in the hotel, Chris officially checked in as a contestant in this year's national pageant. All eyes were on Chris, who was clad head to toe in dark-washed Wrangler denim. Her painted red-and-turquoise boots, emblazoned with scenes from Utah's landscape, matched her chunky necklace, bracelet and belt. We're biased, but we think she looked phenomenal. Chris' family would like to thank all of Chris' supporters. It's taken 13 years to get here -- and we wouldn't be here without all of your help, love and support. This weekend was the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association Finals in Heber City and I also did the drawing for the Browning 12 Gauge Shotgun and the quilt that I have been selling raffle tickets for. JT Wade of Heber City won the quilt. He was actually hoping for the shotgun but he told me that he would take the quilt to college with him this year. Wade Eva from Santaquin, Utah won the shotgun and he didn't even know that he was entered in the drawing! His wife had entered him and it was a nice early Christmas present. I want to thank Becky and Mindy Price and Kathy Lefler for their time and hard work on the quilt. It is beautiful. I would also like thank Browning for helping us get the shotgun. Congratulations to the winners and how crazy that we are all "Wades".

It was a fun weekend. Thanks to Jodi Stark, Brandee Behling, and Megan Mitchel for helping me carry flags and Congratulations to my sister-in-law Sharlee Wade for winning the girls All-Around in the RMPRA.

Well this weekend I realized what the most rewarding, and for me emotional, part of being Miss Rodeo Utah is. My little 3 year old friend Samantha Smith dressed up for Halloween and when people asked her what she was dressed as, she said "Chris". I got all teary-eyed when her grandma told me the story because I knew that I have touched someones life the way that I had been impacted when I was a little girl. I knew that I had become some other little girl's "Mary Shaw". Its such an emotional experience for me knowing that 12 years of chasing my dreams and goals has made an impression on a little girl and that I have done what I am supposed to do as Miss Rodeo Utah. Its something that I have become so passionate about and I hope to have this rewarding experience many times throughout the year. I think that Samantha makes a darling little rodeo queen.

Today was my Birthday. The big 24!!! I had such a good day and want to thank everyone that sent their messages to wish me a Happy Birthday. I got some really good presents. My mom bought me an All-American Girl doll with red hair and brown eyes just like me and she said that when Miss Rodeo America is over and she is done sewing clothes for me, she will make my doll a matching chap outfit. A couple other past Miss Rodeo Utah's have received these dolls and I thought it was very special. I can put it in a shadow box with other great memories of this year. Thanks mom!

Wilderness Circuit Finals

The whole weekend of the Wilderness Circuit Finals was so fun and I enjoyed spending time with all of the girls. We carried sponsor flags at the rodeo each night, Thursday we went to the membership meeting, Saturday we went to the Contract Personnel/Year End Award/Sponsor Luncheon, and after the go-rounds each night there was an award banquet at the Comfort Suites and Holiday Inn. I appreciate the Wilderness Circuit Committee for involving the queens in everything and I encourage everyone to go to the rodeo next year.

Wilderness Circuit Finals- Pink Night

Friday night at the rodeo was Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night. This cause was started by Wrangler and has spread to rodeos nationwide who want to support the fight against breast cancer. Rodeo committees will donate $1 for every spectator who comes to the rodeo wearing pink and the Wilderness Circuit Finals also had a silent auction this year to help raise more money for the cause. Val Byrum collected dozens of great silent auction gifts that people were able to bid on throughout the week and all of the proceeds were donated to McKay-Dee Hospital to help those affected by breast cancer. Wrangler started the initiative five years ago and since then over $5 million has been donated from rodeo events to support the cause.

Spanish Fork FFA Fundraiser

Tonight I got to be a kid again at the Spanish Fork FFA Carnival where the high school students were raising money to pay for their trip to National FFA Convention because their chapter had the winning state horse judging team. I got to jump in their bounce house, pet farm animals with my little Samantha, throw darts at balloons and play horseshoes with Tammy Sweat-Chipman, throw a whip cream pie in a little kids face (lol), eat nachos and cotton candy, and all sorts of other crazy things. I really enjoyed myself. Their advisor and teacher, Kasee Smith took me in their Ag Building and showed me the bones of the Horse Steve that the students are cleaning and re-building and I got a good lesson on teeth and some other bones. I want to thank Kasee and the FFA for inviting me to their event and I wish them the best of luck and hope they have a ton of fun at National Convention next week!

MRU Golf Tournament at Victory Ranch

I truly saw a glimpse of paradise today at the Victory Ranch Golf Course by Park City. It is such a beautiful course with great views and a great staff. I felt like I was on a vacation today instead of working. I want to thank everyone who came and participated in the tournament. We had some great prizes, food, and fun thanks to alot of good friends and volunteers. I would like to thank Victory Ranch first of all for allowing us the honor of holding our event at their private golf course. Thank you Tom Bonner for your countless hours spent organizing the event. I just wanted to tell everyone thank you for making my Miss Rodeo Utah Gala Fundraiser successful. The amount of support I have received as Miss Rodeo Utah is overwhelming and I have some of the greatest friends and family that a girl could ask for.

There were people there at 12:00 in the afternoon helping set everything up. We had some awesome donations for the live and silent auctions. Josh Evertson and his band were awesome. Comedian Keith Stubbs was hilarious. Bella's Fresh Mexican Grill prepared the best meal; the pulled pork and ribs were amazing! Gossners, Coca-cola and Frito Lay were so great to work with. I appreciate Davis County for letting us use the exhibit hall at the Legacy Center. The building was perfect! The whole atmosphere was enjoyable and I will cherish that feeling forever.

I would like to thank my Mom and Dad for their support, my brothers Cooper and Cody, Sharlee and Brandee, John and Cindy Percival, Lisa and Barry Panter, Vance and Peggy Farrer, Barry and Heidi Fitzgerald, and Kent and Jane Fitgerald for being such a good family and being there to help. It makes me emotional to look back on the evening to realize that all of these people were there for me and a great organization. Miss Rodeo Utah Gala!!!

I would like to invite everyone to attend my Gala on Monday September 28th at 6:00 in Farmington, Utah at the Legacy Center.

We are going to have a great dinner and wonderful entertainment including Josh Evertson and his band and comedian Keith Stubbs, owner of Wise Guys Comedy Clubs.

We will have a live and silent auction and a couple raffles and we have a lot of great items this year!

Utah Sheriff's Assocation

While I was down in St. George for the Dixie Roundup I was able to attend the Utah Sheriff Association's Convention. I got my picture taken with all of the sheriffs from the state of Utah. Dixie Roundup Rodeo and Parade

You know you have a strong testimony of rodeo and the effect it has on families when you travel to a rodeo over four hours from home and you have your mom and dad, Aunt Lisa and Uncle Barry, Cousin Justin and his wife Randy and their children, Cousin Marsha and her husband and children, my brother Cody and his wife Sharlee, and her parents John and Cindy all there for the rodeo. I guess I can honestly say rodeo is in our blood.

My brother was up in the steer wrestling Saturday night and my dad hazed for him and Dustin Bennett. Cody got 2nd in the rodeo and won a check; made his trip well worth it. Both Cody and Dustin have qualified for the Wilderness Circuit Finals in October in Ogden, Utah; so once again I know that I'll have another rodeo with a huge family support. I know that good parents and rodeo have been the structure for the type of person I am and I'm so proud of my heritage and our family relationship.

St. George Lion's Special Needs Rodeo

The St. George Lion's Club organizes an awesome Special Needs Rodeo and it was an honor to be involved this year. I enjoyed working with the Dixie Roundup Queens Shaylee and Summer.

Participating in Special Needs Rodeos is such a rewarding experience and it really teaches me to have a better outlook on life. I had a very special Aunt Bonnie (my dad's sister) who passed away this last year and she was the most amazing person I have ever met. She was born with some mental challenges as well as physical. She was born with deformed legs and the doctors told my grandma that she would never be able to walk. My grandma wouldn't accept that and after multiple surgeries Bonnie was able to walk and play and go to school like all of the other kids. Even with all of the challenges she faced, she always had a positive outlook on life and I know that I am a better person just for having her in my life.

Special Needs children love animals and rodeo and I am so happy that I am able to help share those things with them.

Utah State Fair

Congo and I had such an exciting time at the State Fair, by the fourth night we had to use the fence to stay upright while we were clearing the arena of calves and steers. What a great rodeo. It was an honor to carry the American flag in front of a packed stadium. It was amazing to show patriotism for our flag and country the cowboy way during the weekend of September 11th

Evanston, Wyoming

Evanston Cowboy Days was my first out of state rodeo even though it was closer for me than for Miss Rodeo Wyoming Allie Bass. I also had my first funnel cake and my first peanut butter ball at the suggestion of the Ogden Pioneer Days Secretary Jackie Belnap and it was well worth it.

Tremonton Utah

I have officially found the new rodeo queen capital of Utah. Tremonton's petite princess category had 32 contestants and I think I was more excited than they were when their director asked me to ride on the trailer with them through the grand entry. It was so much fun! The people were so nice and they have the best mutton busters that I have ever seen.

Huntsman Cancer Foundation Hope on the Range Gala

I had my biggest shock as Miss Rodeo Utah so far when Jon Huntsman himself planted a big kiss on my cheek at the Hunstman Cancer Hope on the Range Gala. Huntsman Cancer was founded by Jon and his wife Karen who are committed to finding a cure for cancer through genetic research. A cancer survivor himself, Mr. Huntsman has donated over $500 million to the institute during his lifetime. The Huntsman Cancer Institute aids in the research of cancer through the world's largest database for genetics. It was such an honor to be invited to this grand event, where I was able to meet people like Jon Huntsman and Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and his wife. I was able to work along with some of my fellow rodeo queens Stormy Henderson, the DNCFR Queen; Jackie McMullin, the Cache County Rodeo Queen; Martina Wardel, Miss Rodeo Oakley; Bailey Sizemore, the Silverstate International Rodeo Queen; and Courtney Woolsey, the Utah State High School Rodeo Queen. We greeted people at the doors, helped them find their seats, sold raffle tickets, and served as spotters during the live auction. The dinner and the whole event was beautiful and I want to say Thank You for allowing me to be a part of the event. It was such an honor!

Hooper Tomato Days Queen Contest

Davis County Fair & Rodeo

I had a great time at the Davis County Fair and Rodeo and met so many new friends! Davis County is full of little sweethearts and I had a great time getting to know all of these cute little girls that were watching the rodeo. Before the rodeo, I went and walked through the fair exhibits and retail booths and of course my favorite was the one with all of the JEWELRY!!!! I was able to meet Jennifer Barlow, who along with her husband Dave, owns Bohemian Cowgirl and they outfitted me with an awesome charm necklace. It was such a pleasure to meet them and I love my new bling. The announcer for the rodeo was Don Jesser from Idaho, who announces from horseback. I was able to visit with him and Regan Torres, the Wilderness Circuit Queen before the rodeo and while we were clearing the arena during the timed events. I would like the encourage everyone to make it out to Farmington's rodeo next year. They are such wonderful people and I want to thank them for having me at their rodeo as well as allowing me to use one of their exhibit buildings for my fundraiser on Monday September 28th. I hope to see everyone there!

Coalville

At Coalville's rodeo I had my good friend Sarah come and visit me. It was her birthday and she wanted to get her picture taken so she sat on Congo with me for her pictures. Hope you had a good birthday Sarah!

Once again, since my mother grew up with the North/South Summit residents, I was able to meet some old acquaintances who had learned that my long journey at the Miss Rodeo Utah Pageant had finally paid off. The local rodeo queens Hannah Nilson, Bailee Richens, and Sierra Boyce were all fun girls that I enjoyed meeting and I hope to see them in future years competing at the Miss Rodeo Utah pageant.

Mtn. Valley Stampede Parade

Two parades and a rodeo in one day and Congo looks like he is loving life- don't you think? You would never guess that this old boy is a stallion. He is my dad's team roping horse and he makes the best parade horse. He's pretty easy going.

It was so neat to have one of my first rodeos in my hometown, especially because I am the first cowgirl from Wasatch County to win Miss Rodeo Utah. Its such an honor and I appreciate everyone and their support and well wishes. It means so much!

Gathering of the Guard

After the Roy Parade I visited the Healing Field in Ogden, Utah. This field is a tribute to every American life lost during the Global War on Terror, where an American Flag is raised in the name of each American. There are approximately 5000 flags raised in the shape of the United States, making it the largest flag field display of its kind in history. It was an emotional experience to remember those that have stood for America and fought for the freedoms that we enjoy.

I was able to meet the Bees and Utah State University Mascots and they even allowed me to get my horse out of the trailer "as long as he was pottie trained". The visitors were very interested in my horse and I even had a young girl who had lost her father in the Iraq War get on Congo with me for a picture. It was definitely a "Weekend to Remember" and such an honor.

Roy Days Parade

Saturday was a packed day. The morning began at the Roy Days Parade and I had my first little panic attack as Miss Rodeo Utah. I went to check-in for the parade and they didn’t have me entered! Some how my entry had been deleted from their list but they were so great. They put me at the front of the parade with the dignitaries, gave me a corsage, and made me feel welcome. They weren’t “expecting horses” and I had the only horse in the entire parade, but the attendees really seemed to enjoy the whinnying horse. I’m sure the Roy City Police Department enjoyed the parade right behind us in their clean vehicles more than I enjoyed their sirens the whole morning. Thank goodness they weren’t on duty as they watched my un-registered trailer driving down the parade route. Thank you Roy City for making me feel welcome at your parade!

Hometown Rodeo-Mtn. Valley Stampede

It’s awesome to be announced at your home town parade and rodeo just days after realizing your dreams. I had so many people coming up and congratulating me. I can’t tell you just how much I appreciate everyone’s support. Stormy Henderson, the Dodge National Circuit Finals Queen and I had a little showdown at the rodeo Saturday night. After all the little kids ran the stick horse race, Stormy and I raced each other. The announcer really got the crowd going- people yelling for Idaho, people yelling for Utah, we had our stick horses and had to run around a barrel and back to the starting line. To be honest, I cheated, on purpose. I took off on “get set” and Stormy went on “Go”, I had the inside lane to run around the barrel and……we still tied. I’m slow but Stormy is like a foot taller than me so I’m okay with that.

Mtn. Valley Stampede Special Kids Rodeo

Friday I was able to go to the very first Special Kids Rodeo held by the Mtn. Valley Stampede-my own home town rodeo. They had a great turnout. There were 33 kids signed up prior to the event and even more showed up that day. The events they had were so exciting: barrel racing, team roping, horseback riding, a Princess contest, and even hide races from the back of a Polaris Ranger. My special cousin Tiffany Simmons was in the Princess contest where all of the girls answered questions and got tiaras and banners and it was so special to have family there.

Castledale

Tonight I had some traveling buddies for the rodeo in Castledale, Utah. My "little man"-nephew Clay, his mom Brandee, my brother Cooper and his team roping partner Craig and another cowboy named Chance all went to the rodeo with me. Its so nice to have friends and family together at a rodeo. My brother was up in the team roping that night so it was very convenient.

I was able to carry the Dodge sponsor flag and clear the arena of calves and steers during the tie-down roping and steer wrestling. They kept me busy and made me feel welcome.

I was even lucky enough to have my brother and Craig bring me chicken & ranch pizza and drinks from the cowboy tent while I was waiting for more work. They would hardley even let me saddle my own horse. Thanks guys! I had a lot of fun!

Wright Signs

Today I went to pick my trailer up from Wright Signs in Ogden, Utah. Cody Wright invited me to his shop to pick out the lettering for my name on my new trailer. I told them that I'm pretty easy going, easy to please..... I was fine with anything that was fancy but bold enough that it was easy to read. I was only there for a short time and they had it all done. And it looks awesome!

Days of 47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City

Every Miss Rodeo Utah in the past has made her first appearance at the "Daddy of Em All" in Cheyenne, Wyoming but the dates this year would've only allowed me to make the final Sunday perfomance.

So I feel very honored to have been able to make my first appearance right at home at the Days of 47' Rodeo in Salt Lake City.

They were so gracious to me and my family; invited us to sit in the VIP section, involved me in their buckle presentation, and gave me a grand introduction for my first appearance as Miss Rodeo Utah. It was so fun and something I could definitely get used to!

Thank you to Brad Harmon and everyone on the rodeo committee for making me and my family feel so welcome.

Miss Rodeo Utah 2009 Contest

I can't believe that I'm finally here. I've imagined this moment my whole life- when I would be announced as Miss Rodeo Utah; the tears, hard work, determination, and dedication would all be worth it and I could represent the things that I am so passionate about: family, rodeo, the rodeo cowboy, and our western way of life.

It has totally been worth the wait. I started competing in rodeo queen pageants when I was 12 years old, the same year that Mary Shaw from Utah was Miss Rodeo America. It took me five tries at Miss Rodeo Utah to finally realize my dreams, but I am so thankful for each year and the experiences, lessons, and friendships that came with each one. Before winning Miss Rodeo Utah, I was 1st Attendant two times as well as 2nd Attendant one year and to have high expectations for myself to do better each year, made every year I came back even more challenging. I've learned that things happen for a reason and I was supposed to be Miss Rodeo Utah in 2009. My goal this year was not to be the winner, but to be the leader. I wanted to set an example to the new girls and be a friend to my competitors; fix their hair if they needed help, tuck in their shirt if it needed tucked in; and I wanted to leave, win or lose, with no regrets. And what a rewarding experience. Not only will I be able to represent committees, sponsors, cowboys, my family, my self, and the other ten beautiful young ladies that competed at the Miss Rodeo Utah contest this year, but I will be a part of an elite group of women for the rest of my life.

I have to say that the young women that competed at Miss Rodeo Utah this year were so much fun and we had a great time! From Karianne and Chantel's "armpit dance" to staying up until 2:00 in the morning to practice dance steps with Stormy, there was never a dull moment.

I want to thank everyone that has supported me in achieving my dreams and those who will support me this year. It's going to be a great one!
